Background:
The world is severely affected by ongoing economic turmoil. Bangladesh also has got some sort of heat of the recession especially from remittance and export sector. But the textile and garment sector has continued its growth in a good pace.
Although it is facing severe competition from rival countries and a number of problems from the internal infrastructure system, endless effort from the entrepreneurs, textile engineers, executives and workers never let the growth to stop. While 81.43% of total export is contributed by the textile & garment sector it is very easy to imagine the consequences any trouble or depletion of the sector.
Every day the industry is facing challenges from home and abroad. We can not keep our self out of the global economic recession and also we can not deny the labor unrest in the garment factories. When ever any industry gets opportunity and care it rises but after reaching a certain stage sustainability became the first priority. A sector that contributes to 13% of our total GDP can not be kept vulnerable at any situation.
Vocational and professional education, Research and development are the basic prerequisites for a sustainable industrial sector. Bangladesh is blessed with some level of engineering level study scope for the textile garment sector. From Years College of Textile Technology is the supreme institution in the country in producing textile engineers. Realizing the importance of engineers the government upgraded some diploma textile institutes to college to offer B. Sc. Degrees. On the other hand there are a number of Private Universities which are offering the degree. Some institutions are offering degrees in art and design as well. BGMEA institute of Fashion & Technology is also producing graduates for garment sector. The country is set to produce more than two thousands (2000) textile – garment graduates every year from different universities.
